Chad Murphy was a handsome young man. Chad was also a cute little boy with very blonde hair that darkened as he got older. Chad was very likable.

Chad learned to ride a motorcycle when he was about 4 years old. He loved to ride motorcycles and was very good at it also.

When Chad was growing up he was very athletic. He could ride all kinds of wheelies and tricks on his bicycle. Chad played on a Baseball team and his Dad (Jerry Murphy was the coach). Chad also played basketball, football and was on a bowling league. He liked to shoot pool also. He liked Rock and Roll music.

Chad started working when he was about 13 years old throwing newspapers in St. Joseph, Missouri. He had to get up VERY early, but he was a good worker. He was awarded the Outstanding Newspaper Carrier Award from the St. Joseph News Press and Gazette.

He was also awarded the Missouri State Water Patrol Achievement Award in March , 1981 from the Department of Public Safety. Chad loved to swim and was very good at it. He also enjoy other water activities such as skiing and fishing. He was very atheletic.

Chad dated and had lots of pretty girlfriends. He met Erin St. John Smith and they developed a relationship. Erin had 2 sons with Chad. Marc Owen Murphy was born July 12, 1986 and Matthew Scott Smith was born July 12, 1987. Chad and Erin lived together, mostly in Independence, MO. Chad worked construction and factory work.

Chad liked to party. The night he died he was going from one bar to another. He must have been going at a very high speed. Making a curve on 47th Street in Raytown, MO he lost control and hit a tree. His car hit the tree on the right passenger side of the car. The car was went through a wooden fence and wrapped around a tree breaking the car in half. Chad was thrown and found on the back fence of the yard. His head was smashed badly.

I (his mother) woke up the night Chad was killed at exactly the time he died. I woke up with my left leg hurting. I decided to get up and take something for it if it was bad enough to wake me from my sleep. That is how I knew the time....I looked when I went downstairs. Later the funeral home asked if I would like his clothes. I said yes. The left leg was torn. That was the leg that woke me. She said his leg was torn up pretty badly, but it was not broken.

It is a mother's worst nightmare to be woken at 3:00am in the morning by the police and told your son is dead.

Chad was 22 years,10 months and 2 day old, when he was killed.. In 2 more months he would have been 23.
