ELMWOOD — Marian D. Berger, age 72, of Elmwood died on Thursday January 12, 2006, at the Dunn County Health Care Center in Menomonie after an eight-month battle with cancer.

Marian was born May 28, 1933, near Irvington, the daughter of Marion and Favorite (Hathaway) Smith. She grew up in the Irvington and Weston areas of Dunn County. She married Leonard Berger June 16, 1952. After marriage they lived in Kenosha until 1958, when they moved to the Downsville-Menomonie area. Marian worked as a nurse’s aide at Memorial Hospital-Nursing Home in Menomonie until the Myrtle Werth Hospital was built. She then worked as a CNA at the Dunn County Health Care Center in Menomonie until she retired in 1995. In the summer of 2001, Marian and Leonard moved to Elmwood. In October of 2005, Marian became a resident of the Dunn County Health Care Center where she remained until she lost her battle with cancer.

Marian is survived by her husband, Leonard; three daughters, Joan (Bernard) Beissel of Hampton, Minn., Linda (Loren) Petrash and Brenda (Duane) Kraft, both of Lakeville, Minn.; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her mother, Favorite Smith of Glenwood City; five sisters, Eunice Donicht of Menomonie, Fern (Donald) Gleiter of Aurora, Iowa, Doris Campeau of Coon Rapids, Minn., Sharon (Jack) Durbin of Hudson and Janet (David) Erickson of Hampton, Minn.; two brothers, Alan (Nancy) Smith of Boyceville and Dale (Linda) Smith of Jessup, Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her father, Marion; her foster parents, John and Zerelda Lauderdale; two sisters, Irene Schmidt and Joyce Siler; two brothers, Delbert and Morris Smith.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 16, 2006, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elmwood, with Rev. Ambrose Blenker officiating. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery in Downsville.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Menomonie and one hour prior to services at the church in Elmwood on Monday.
