Mary and husband Azariah Smith were founder-members of the Moravian congregation at Sichem in the Oblong, Dutchess Co., New York. The congregation ceased to exist in 1772, but the Smiths remained on the land and continued to have links through members of their family to the Moravians, particularly in Pennsylvania where several of their children moved. Azariah died in 1784 as attested by the probate of his will. At the time, Mary was still living and his will left her specific parts of the farm and house for her lifetime. Exactly when she died is unknown. The Moravian burial ground at Sichem in the Oblong (near Amenia) is now lost. The last gravestones known to be standing were Azariah's and one other, attested to in about 1902. The burial ground had by then been used for many, many years as pasture and the cattle apparently knocked over then broke the gravestones.
