Groton - Rita Denise Sprinkel, 84, of Groton, passed away peacefully, Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010, at Avalon Healthcare Center surrounded by her loving family following a courageous and stoic struggle with a lengthy illness.

Rita was the widow of Wesley E. Sprinkel, who predeceased her in 2005. Rita was born in West Shefford, Canada, the lively, golden-haired, middle daughter of Aristide and Bernadette (Dutilly) Gingras.

As a young girl, her family moved to Groton, and it was there during World War II, Rita met the love of her life, a submariner in the U.S. Navy who was stationed in New London. Together they raised seven children and were married 56 years.

Blessed with a strong religious background and immersed in the love of her large extended family, Rita gave generously to others and was beloved by all. Those who met Rita quickly recognized the kindness and warmth behind her gentle blue eyes and could only love her. She supported her husband during his naval career and in his other business pursuits while doting lovingly on her kids. Rita often rolled up her shirtsleeves and worked right alongside Wes, always taking such great pride in her family. Sources of joy for Rita could also be found in her Sacred Heart Parish contributions and activities that she participated in throughout the years.

She is survived by two devoted sons, Thomas J. Clay and his fiancée, Pamela Carroll, of Groton, and Wesley E. Sprinkel Jr. of Groton; four loyal, steadfast, and dedicated daughters, Joyce B. Paige and her husband, Olin Jr., of Quaker Hill, Gale C. Huntley and her husband, Donald, of East Lyme, Theresa S. Pearce and her husband, Richard, of Gales Ferry, and Mary D. Michaud and her husband, Mark, of Groton. In addition to her children, she also leaves behind 14 adoring grandchildren, Lori, Thomas Jr., Tammy, Dawn, Olin III, Chrissy, Christa, Allyson, Benjamin, Elizabeth, Mark Jr., Katherine, Jacob, Lauren; 15 wonderful great-grandchildren to include one darling great-great-grandchild; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her brother, Gerard Gingras and his wife, Mary, of Uncasville and a sister-in-law, Mary Tompkins of Illinois, also survive her.

She was predeceased in death by a brother, Raymond Gingras, and two sisters, Lucille Echols and Theresa Silva; and a dearly loved daughter, Katherine Ann Sprinkel. Her precious poodle, Marcel, survives her and will be left in the tender care of a daughter.

Her family will be receiving relatives and friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Byles-Groton Memorial Home, 310 Thames St., Groton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday in Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Drive, Groton. Burial will follow in the Colonel Ledyard Cemetery, Groton.
