Charles served as a Staff Sergeant and Asst. Radio Operator on B-17F (#42-30126), 416th Bomber Squadron, 99th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Niagara County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 1, 1942 in Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in warehousing and also as Divorced, with dependents.

Charles was "Killed In Action" when his B-17F was attacked and shot down by enemy aircraft fire over Switzerland during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
