Tunis Ernest Van Heukelom, son of C.R. and Minnie (De Bruin) Van Heukelom, was born April 24, 1916, near Prairie City, Iowa. After a few years, the family moved to Ridge View Farm, the farm where Ernest was living when he passed away on May 4, 2009, at the age of ninety-three years.

Ernest graduated from Oskaloosa High School and was united in marriage with Evelyn De Jong on January 29, 1941. To this union three children were born: Karen, Ronald, and Mary. After farming for a brief time near Pella, Iowa, Ernest and Evelyn moved their family to Ridge View Farm, when Ernest's father retired from farming. The couple farmed together for sixty-eight years.

Ebenezer Reformed Church was his home church from age four and he continued to be a dedicated member until his death. During his lifetime, he served his church in the consistory as elder, deacon, and also as a Sunday School teacher for forty years. He and Evelyn were sponsors of the youth group for many years.

Ernest was a faithful Gideon and participated in Bible distributions, prayer meetings, and the jail ministry. He and Evelyn served as zone leaders, area coordinators, and state board members. Ernest accepted church assignments until the age of ninety-one years.

He was a member of the Lions Club and received the Melvin Jones Award; a diamond pin for 100% during his tenure as president of the club. Until the age of ninety-two, he was assisting in the pancake breakfast fund raisers.

Young people and the future of farming were of special interest to Ernest. He was a 4-H leader in Madison Township and a Farm Bureau board member. His recreational interests included fishing and hunting in Iowa, Canada, and Alaska, woodworking, and traveling abroad and in the United States.

Those left to cherish his memory are: his wife, Evelyn; his three children and their spouses: Karen and Fred Wohlstein of Lexington, Kentucky, Rev. Ronald and Carol Van Heukelom of Omaha, Nebraska, and Mary and John Hiemstra of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many friends.

Preceding him in death are: his parents; his sister Genella Engbers; his sister Josephine De Jong; and his brother Rev. Clarence Van Heukelom.

Ernest will be missed by his family and all who knew and loved him.
