Melvin "Mel" Van Huis, age 86, of Mt. Vernon, passed away Thurs., Apr. 1, 2004, in Mt. Vernon. He was born Dec. 15, 1917, in Edam, Sask., Canada to Gerrit and Tena (Visser) Van Huis. Mel grew up in Eastern Washington and moved to Whatcom County in the 1940's. He married Melberne Olin in 1942 in Lynden. Mel was a bus driver and truck driver. He belonged to the Teamsters, Early Risers Toastmasters in Mt. Vernon, Washington State Horseshoe Pitchers Association, Skagit Valley Horseshoe Pitchers Association (2 time state champ horseshoe pitcher), and the Canadian Elks. He attended Avon United Methodist Church. Mel was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two daughters.

Mel is survived by his wife; son, Gordon; grandson, Mark & wife Erika; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Wed., Apr. 7, 12:00 o'clock noon in the Greenacres|Moles Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Edd Denton officiating. Memorials may be directed to a charity of your choice.
