Walter Lee Orr, age 79 of Illinois Veterans Home, Quincy, and formerly of #1 Brennan Drive died Sunday, February 20, 2005 at 10:50 am in Blessing Hospital.
He was born July 3, 1925 in Cincinnati Landing, Pike County, IL the son of Jeremiah James and Sarah Emmaline Dunn Orr. On July 30, 1950 he married Vernelda E. Wittler in Quincy, IL. She preceded him in death on May 31, 1999.
He served our country in the US Army 20th Armored Division in Europe in WWII. He received the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Distinguished Unit Citation, and the Marksmanship Badge.
He was employed for 26 years in Engineering and Quality Control at Motorola until they closed. He was employed several years as an engineer at American Safety in Palmyra, MO and he ended his working career at Monroe City Diemakers.
He was a member of the First Union Congregational Church for many years, serving as a Deacon and Treasurer of the Sunday School. He was also a past president of the Toastmasters Club and a lifelong devoted St. Louis Cardinal fan. Walter enjoyed woodworking, clockmaking, camping, bowling, hunting and fishing. He was an all-around handyman. Walter was active with his grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved them dearly.
Survivors include his daughter, Linda Laws and her husband David of Quincy, IL; 2 sons, Dennis Orr and his wife Suzy, Redstone, CO; Lawrence Orr and his special friend Janet, Joliet, IL; 5 grandchildren, Gretchen Russell, Americus, KS; Michael Laws, Quincy; Christy Laws, Lillington, NC; Jeremy and Patrick Orr, both of Joliet, IL; 4 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Warren Orr and his wife Wynona, Canton, MO; Russell Orr and his wife Carol, Quincy; one sister, Betty Grant and her husband Jerry, Quincy. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents, and 2 brothers, Frank and Robert "Buck" Orr. He also was preceded in death by his beloved dog and faithful companion, Rambo.
Services will be Thursday, February 24, 2005, at 2:00 pm in All Faiths Chapel at the Illinois Veterans Home with the Rev. John Adams officiating. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 pm at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Quincy Humane Society.
