Jane Degenaar Hansen, former public school teacher and mother and grandmother to a large and wide-spread family, died Feb. 28 in Woburn, MA, near the home of her daughter. She was 88.

A long-time resident of Sea Cliff, Mrs. Hansen was married for 57 years to the late Franklin J. Hansen. She was the loving mother of Jayne of Manorville, NY, Antoinette Tasker (Peter) of Lexington, MA, F. James (Debra, deceased) of Bay Shore, Jeffrey (Janet) of East Meadow, Ellen Hansen-Ellis (Kenneth) of Berea, OH, and Jonathan (Shara) of West Islip. She also enjoyed 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jane Hansen was born Jane Degenaar Southwick in Glens Falls, NY, daughter of Calvin Southwick Sr. and Antoinette Southwick (nee Degenaar). She was the oldest of three children; siblings included her sister Marjorie Thurlow and Calvin II (deceased).

A graduate of the Albany State Teacher's College (now SUNY at Albany), Mrs. Hansen was a homemaker as she raised her six children, but returned to teaching in 1970 as a social studies teacher at Bethpage High School. She returned to college and received a masters in education in 1972 from C.W. Post College. She loved being in the classroom and was a popular teacher among the students there. She retired after 16 years in 1985.

She was an avid and capable musician who played the cello and the piano, and sang alto in her church choir for many years. She also substituted as choir director when needed. She and her husband were stalwart members for 30+ years of the Carpenter Memorial Methodist Church in Glen Cove, teaching Sunday school, chairing committees, leading worship services and singing in the choir.

Jane leaves a legacy of unconditional love and support to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had an unflagging enthusiasm for life and learning, and her good humor and kind, gracious manner made all feel welcome in her company.

A memorial service was held on March 12 at the Village Church (United Methodist) in Bayville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the veteran's organization of your choice.
