Richard "Dick" Gotcher was born in Jan 22, 1947, in Tucumcari, New Mexico to Preston "Jack" Gotcher and Letha Malone Gotcher. He was the 5th of 6 children.
Dick's Cause of Death was Advanced Oral Tongue Cancer.
Dick attended school in Texas and in Artesia, graduating from High School in Artesia He joined the U.S. Navy after graduation, on July 26, 1965, and served two tours of Duty in Vietnam. He was a Vietnam Medic & a Hospital Corpsman, and his brother, Buford Gotcher, was a cook on a US Navy ship during Vietnam. He married his 1st wife, Shirley Gibson, from Artesia, New Mexico, in Carson City, Nevada in 1969. After he retired from the Navy and Dick worked for Teledyne Oil Exploration as a Vibrator Operator for 4 years, with his brother, Buford Gotcher. During that time, he met & married his 2nd wife, Patrina Hill, on April 19, 1982, in Del Rio, Texas. He worked as a Youth Supervisor at the West Texas Children's Home in Pyote, Texas for 7 years, & then as a Val Verde County Corrections Officer in the County Jail, in Del Rio, Texas. He worked for the Carlsbad Medical Center, in Cardiopulmonary & Respiratory Therapy, in Carlsbad, New Mexico from 1990 to his retirement in 1995. Dick & his 2nd wife, Patrina Gotcher, remarried on March 10, 2005, in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
He was a member of the VFW and enjoyed fishing and camping.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Betty Sinclair of Artesia, New Mexico. Dick was survived by his wife, Patrina Gotcher of Carlsbad, children Benjamin Gotcher of Carlsbad and Kathryn Gotcher and children Alex and Andrew of Carlsbad, Chris Gotcher of Roswell, and Niki Leatherman and husband John of Roswell and children Ashley, Matthew, Seth, Stephanie, and Jered of Roswell; siblings, Laverne Strawn and husband Buddy of Artesia, Buford Gotcher of Artesia, Shirley Sanchez of Artesia, Glenda Maurer and husband Mike of Artesia, and Preston Gotcher and his wife Bobbie of Gatesville, Texas, and many extended family members.
There was no funeral. Dick's arrangements were handled by the Denton-Funchess Funeral Home in Carlsbad. He was cremated by the Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home in Roswell. His ashes were given to his wife, Patrina Gotcher of Carlsbad, daughter, Niki Leatherman of Roswell, son Chris Gotcher of Roswell, daughter, Kathryn Gotcher of Carlsbad, and son Ben Gotcher of Carlsbad. The remainder of his ashes were placed in a smaller vault and buried in a grave with a headstone in the Carlsbad Cemetery (new section).
Dick had Graveside Services. Pastor Mike Maurer (his brother-in-law) of the Victoria Missionary Baptist Church in Artesia officiated. Dick received a 21 Gun Salute and a U.S. Navy Vietnam Purple Heart Plaque from the National Guard Armory in Carlsbad.
