Joanne Smith Wade, died on May 15, 2014. She was the daughter of Charles D. Smith and Ernestine P. Smith of Greenville, NC. She endeared herself to and made an immediate connection with people from all walks of life throughout the world. A graduate of East Carolina College, she lived in Virginia Beach for 24 years. She briefly taught school, supported her first husband Bill Meredith in a variety of business enterprises, and worked for years at Ingram's Pharmacy. In 1988, she married David Wade. Joanne accompanied him on work assignments in the U.S., Asia and Europe. They traveled extensively to dozens of countries in six continents during their life together. She enjoyed their homes in Chesapeake and Lexington, VA. She was recognized for her work with the Red Cross in the pharmacy at the clinic at Fort Monroe. Joanne's ministry at her church included Alter Guild and, what she truly loved, lay reading. Joanne is survived by her husband, Col. David C. Wade III, U.S. Army (Ret.). She was a devoted and proud mother of her children, Kelly Meredith, Banks Meredith (Aleysa), Reed Meredith (Michelle); and stepchildren, Elise Crawford (Gene), Carlisle Wade (Mary), and Andrew Wade (Lori). She was the proud grandmother (Mimi) of nine adorable grandchildren, Anthony, Skyler, Tanner, Madison, Willa, Olivia, Mickey, Bobby, and Dallas. She is also survived by her brother, Charles Smith, and his children Allison and Tres. A service will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 5181 Singleton Way, Virginia Beach, at 1:00 p.m.; reception immediately follows the service. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
