She was born December 14, 1921 near Oskaloosa, the daughter of Jacob and Anna Meppelink DeBruin. She graduated from Feris High School in Michigan, and attended Calvin College and received her teaching certificate, and taught in the Christian school system near Grand Rapids. On August 4, 1959, she was united in marriage to Carl Raymond Plate at Oskaloosa, and he died January 27, 1972. Following their marriage, they farmed northwest of Rose Hill. She moved into Oskaloosa in 1983. She was a long time member of First Christian Reformed Church of Oskaloosa, and had been active in the Ladies Aid and the Coffee Break program. She was also involved in the Willing Workers for the Oskaloosa Christian School, and teaching at various local Vacation Bible schools. She loved gardening, sewing and quilting, visiting with family and friends, and reading to or playing games with her grandchildren. She was a wonderful example of Christian servant hood to her family and community.
Her family includes her son and his wife, Steven and Sandra Plate of Rose Hill; her daughters and their husbands: Laura and Jeffrey Crandle of Spring Lake, Michigan, and Beth and Vernon Engelhoven of Cedar; 10 grandchildren: Melanie, Sherwin (& Kristen), Julie, and Byron Plate, Chelsea, Lindsey, Josh, and Lucas Crandle, and Kristine and Katie Engelhoven; 4 sisters: Helen Veldhuizen and Harriet Van Gilst, both of Oskaloosa, Nadine (& Rev. John) Stek of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Evelyn (& Thaymer) Jonker of Oak Lawn, Illinois; two brothers: Ray (& Evadena) DeBruin of University Park and Marvin (& Jeanette) DeBruin of Oskaloosa; and two sisters in law: Anna DeBruin and Velda Plate, both of Oskaloosa.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister: Mary Van Gilst; and 2 brothers: Calvin and Ernest DeBruin.
