She was born in Henry County on Feb. 12, 1917, to Jacob Philpott and Leora Bowles Philpott. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James S. King Sr.; sisters, Mildred Philpott, Ruby Foster-Smith, Joanne King Frazier and Virginia Kirby Witcher; and brothers, George, James, Jessie, Luther and Matthew Philpott.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of East Martinsville and a former member of Eastern Star Chapter in Detroit, Mich., where she was treasurer.
Surviving are a son, James S. King Jr. of Martinsville; a sister, Era Rashid (Reynolds) of Martinsville; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.
