James Anderson was born near the Potomac River in Virginia.

Farmer in Saint James's District, Person County, North Carolina.

He removed to Sumner County, Tennessee by 1816.

He removed to Washington County (present-day Clinton County), Illinois in 1819.

James Anderson died in 1821 in Crooked Creek Township, Washington County, Illinois (present-day Lake Township, Clinton County, Illinois).

He was probably buried in Wadsworth Cemetery alongside other neighboring pioneers, but there is no remaining grave marker.
