Elayne Agee, resident of Portland, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Friday May 9, 2014. She was 92. Elayne was born in Duluth, Minnesota on February 25, 1922 to Emil and Anna (Leuke) Missahl. Shortly after graduating high school, Elayne relocated to Washington D.C. where she worked as a secretary for Gen. Leshe Groves on the Manhattan Project. This was a pretty exciting time for a 19 year old- she typed the first draft for the ground breaking of the Pentagon, she saw President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and she waited for the news outside the White House (along with the rest of the city) when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Elayne relocated again to Oregon City, Oregon to live with her sister and brother in law in 1948. She met her future husband, Jim Agee, at the boarding house where she lived. They were married on September 14, 1949 in Oregon City, Oregon. Because of Jim's work, Elayne relocated several more times and lived in Corvallis, Portland, Boston, Maryland, Seattle, and San Francisco. She lived in Portland for the last 35 years.
Elayne was a happy Northwest transplant, and was completely enamored of her adopted state of Oregon. Elayne enjoyed camping with her family, and was fond of car rides to see the scenery of the Pacific Northwest. Elayne loved playing bridge, knitting, and sewing, with a special fondness for Barbie doll clothes. For many years, Elayne dressed Barbie dolls and donated them to charity at Christmas. Elayne was a lifelong Lutheran and a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church for 26 years.
Elayne is survived by sons Daniel James Agee of Portland, William Lowell (Deborah Jean) Agee, of Lebanon, Oregon; daughter Jane Agee Vance of Kirkland, Washington; grandchildren Carrie Jane Agee of Portland, Samuel James Agee of Portland, Caitlin Mary Vance of Syracuse, NY, Matthew Vance of Kirkland, Washington; and great-grandchildren Kelcie Myrlayne Agee of Portland, Kaycie Jadon Agee, of Portland, and Caleb Michael Agee of Portland.
Elayne's family would like to thank Doctor Shiloh and Nurse James of Providence Medical Center in Portland for their kindness, compassion, and excellent care they provided for Elayne. A memorial service will be held on Friday May 23, 2014 at 1:00pm at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Portland. Elayne will be laid to rest privately at Willamette National Cemetery.
