Gloria was raised in Round Prairie, Oregon. She attended school in Myrtle Creek, graduating from MCHS in 1954. Gloria was involved in band, choir, and softball while in high school. She went on to attend classes at Univ. of Oregon in Eugene before returning to Myrtle Creek, to work for California Pacific Telephone Co. She began as an operator and worked her way up during her time of 28 years to a Marketing Consultant.
Gloria then began working for Douglas County in the County Clerk's Office at the Courthouse in Roseburg in 1987. After 20 years at the courthouse she retired in 2007.
Gloria was very musically gifted, performing over the years at many weddings around the area. As a member of the Myrtle Creek Grange in 1967 she won the Oregon State Grange talent contest going on to compete at the national competition in New York. Gloria played on the Myrtle Creek women's softball team for many years. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with family, fishing, hunting, and time with her many friends from work, the church, and the community.
She was very involved in organizing annual MCHS class reunions. Gloria served as her family historian and could trace her Burnett/Laurance family history in the Roseburg area back seven generations.
She often times said she was supporting the local economy by spending endless hours at the slot machines at Seven Feathers. Everybody around Myrtle Creek and Roseburg knew Gloria and she will be missed a great deal by all. Gloria was very active in her church (Myrtle Creek United Methodist Church) serving on many committees, singing in the choir, and assisting with upkeep of the church grounds. She was a member of the Roseburg Concert Chorale, the South County Choir, and performed before many audiences over the years as a member of the local McAndrews Sisters Quartet. Gloria had her hands in too many organizations to list but you would be hard pressed to find many people in Douglas County who have not had the pleasure of knowing her. She truly is a pioneer and Myrtle Creek has been left with a very heavy heart.
Gloria is survived by her brother, Gary Burnett, of Troutdale, OR; nephews: Bruce Burnett, of Vancouver, WA, and Jim Burnett, of Milwaukie, OR; niece, Brenda Deibert, of Corbett, OR; eight grand nephews and a grand niece all living in the Portland area.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 23, 2014 at 2 p.m. at the Myrtle Creek Grange Hall, 661 Riverside Dr. Myrtle Creek.
