Mrs. Armstrong, 93, Dies in Rockville


Special Dispatch to The Star.

ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 16.—Mrs. Ellen S. Armstrong, 93, died at her home in Rockville yesterday from a paralytic stroke suffered last week. She was the widow of the Rev. Alfred O. Armstrong, who at the time of his death many years ago was pastor of the Rockville Methodist Church.


She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Rose A. Dawson of Rockville; a brother, Charles Stalnaker of Jasper, Ala.; three grandchildren, Mrs. I. William Hill, Chevy Chase, Md.; Miss Carter Dawson, Rockville, and Maj. J. Somervell Dawson, jr., U.S.A., stationed at Fort Belvoir, Va.; a niece, Mrs. W. Russell Brewer, and nephew, William Stalnaker, both of Cumberland, Md., and two great-grandchildren.


A native of White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., Mrs. Armstrong had lived in Rockville about 46 years.


Funeral services will be at the Rockville Methodist Church at 11 a.m. tomorrow. The Rev. John W. Rosenberger, pastor of the church, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Dr. J. Forrest Prettyman and the Rev. Frank Tyler. Burial will be in Rockville Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Ellen Armstrong, widow of the Rev. Alfred O. Armstrong, former pastor of Rockville Methodist Church, died at her home in Rockville, Wednesday morning following a stroke. Funeral services will be held in the Methodist Church, Friday at 11 A.M. with the Rev. John W. Rosenberger officiating. Burial will be in Rockville Union Cemetery.


A native of White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., Mrs. Armstrong had lived in Rockville 47 years, celebrating her 93rd birthday on August 11. She was a life long worker in church and charitable circles. Though in failing health for the past year, she walked constantly around the town.


She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Rose A. Dawson, of Rockville; three grandchildren, Mrs. I. William Hill, of Chevy Chase; Miss Parker Dawson and Major J. Somervell Dawson, U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Belvoir, Va.; one brother, Charles Stalmaker, of Jasper, Ala., a niece and nephew, Mrs. W. Russell Brewer and William Stalmaker, of Cumberland; two great grandchildren, Rosane Hill and J.S. Dawson, III.

Ellen Stalnaker Armstrong was the widow of Methodist circuit minister Alfred Armstrong. After his death, she remained active in Rockville affairs. At the age of 87 she was praised for her embroidery in the London Evening News. Her "Roosevelt Rose" coverlets were sold from her home on S. Washington Street.
