F.R. Pendleton, Early Everett Logger, Dies

Frank Ryerson Pendleton, early-day Everett logging operator, died yesterday at his home, 3033 43rd Ave. W. He was 89.

Mr. Pendleton is credited with introducing horses to supplant oxen in logging in the Everett area. He began operations there and in Cherry Valley, near Monroe in 1899. His career in the timber industry was built with a partner, Herbert S. Gilkey, Minneapolis, a brother-in-law.

Mr. Pendleton and his partner expanded their logging operations to Vancouver, B.C., in 1912. Their Enterprises included the Pendleton-Gilkey Co., with operations in Everett, Minneapolis and Vancouver, B.C., and the Mohawk Lumber Co., New Westminster, B.C.
Mr. Pendleton was president of the two firms before his retirement two years ago.

During the First World War, Mr. Pendleton was in charge of the Spruce production for the Canadian government.

Born and reared in Oconto, Wis., Mr. Pendleton began his career in the middle west. In recent years his interests were transferred to his four sons Brooks and Crosby Pendleton, both of Everett, Wayne Pendleton of Vancouver, B.C., and Francis Pendleton., New Westminster, B.C.

Mr. Pendleton who moved to Seattle soon after his retirement was a member of the First Church of Christ, Science and Masonic organizations all of Everett.

Surviving besides his sons are wife, Minette;
a stepdaughter, Mrs. Gertrude Greenleaf, Seattle; a sister, Mrs. Allie Crosby, Everett; a brother, Harley Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif; 12 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Private funeral services will be held Monday Forkner’s Chapel.
