Mrs. Britton was born Oct. 12, 1923, in Kinston, N.C., the daughter of the late John and Alpha Godwin, grew up in Goldsboro and Raleigh, N.C., graduated from Needham Broughton High School and attended Peace Junior College.
Mrs. Britton was a founding member of the Fine Arts Council of Sumter and, as a volunteer, served as its treasurer for the first 10 years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, serving as treasurer and as a circle leader for a number of years; a former treasurer of the Junior Welfare League; and a member of the Sumter Gallery of Art, the Cotillion Club, Thursday Afternoon Book Club and Wednesday Bridge Club. She was bookkeeper for many years for family businesses.
