Andrew was born in Prussia and immigrated to the U. S. A. in 1871 with his mother and seven siblings. They settled in Wisconsin. His father had died in the war. Julius Birholtz of Rosedale Township, Clark, South Dakota is Andrew's brother.

Mary Hoodie became his bride and they homesteaded in Fordham Township receiving the final papers in 1894. Five children were born to this union: Cecelia 1889-1977 married Chester Flint, Sr.; Leo A. 1890-1917; Charles 1893-1975 married Jessie Porter; Frances born in 1895 married to Dwight Johnson;
Frank 1905-1936.
