Eleanor Nesvik, Stanley, ND died Monday, February 3, 2014 in Stanley. Her memorial service is scheduled for Friday, May 30, 2014 at First Lutheran Church, White Earth, ND. Burial will be in Kristiansand Cemetery, White Earth.

Eleanor Madeline (Julien) Nesvik was born August 8, 1908 on the family homestead near Edmore, ND, to Oluf and Elise (Hanson) Julien, where she was raised with a sister and two brothers. She attended and graduated from Edmore School. Their mother took piano lessons so she could teach Eleanor and her sister to play the piano when they were young girls. When Eleanor was in high school she played a reed organ for Sunday church services in Edmore. She practiced every day and played classical piano before entering college. She attended Mayville State College during 1929-30 and earned a two-year teaching certificate. Earlier she had won a piano competition and received a scholarship that awarded her free piano lessons for a year while attending college. Following college she taught in country schools for approximately 13 years.

Eleanor married Johannes (John) B. Nesvik of White Earth, ND in June of 1943 in Sidney, MT. She met John when he, as school clerk, hired her to teach in a rural school in the White Earth area. After marrying, they made their home in Stanley. In 1957-58 she taught grades 1-3 in Ross, ND. She loved music and in 1959, began teaching piano lessons at her home to as many as 35 pupils per week. John passed away in May 1972. Eleanor was one of the first residents to reside in Golden Acres senior housing in Stanley when it opened in 1973. In May 2000 she moved to Mountrail Bethel Home.

Eleanor's favorite pastimes were playing the piano and accordion, as well as oil and watercolor painting, crafts, and growing flowers in her yard. She gave piano lessons to several generations of area families and enjoyed them all.

Church was very important to Eleanor. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Edmore. She joined the Baptist Church in Stanley in the 1950's. Her music was an important part for many churches in the area.

She is survived by a daughter, Mavis Salonek; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and ten great-great grandchildren; four nieces and six nephews.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, John Nesvik; parents, Oluf and Elise Julien; siblings, Stella Stimac, Vernon and Kindred Julien.
