Dorothy Marlene Vos was born in Pella, Iowa on July 25, 1934, the first child and only daughter to Barend (Ben) and Alice Emma Uitermarkt Vos. The first six years of her life were spent in Pella where she attended the Lincoln Grade School.

In 1940, she, along with her brothers, Donald and Dean, moved with their parents to a farm north of Pella in the Bethel Church neighborhood. Dorothy then attended the Bunker Hill Country School, riding her pony, Molly, each day. In 1946, the family moved to a farm in Mahaska County west of Leighton, Iowa near Olivet. Dorothy graduated from the 8th grade at the Burr Oak Country School, where she either walked or rode her bike to school. Dorothy graduated from Pella High School in 1953, playing the French horn in the marching band for four years. Following her graduation she, and a high school girl friend, rented a small basement apartment in Pella while she worked at Fowler Telephone Company for one year.

On August 4, 1954, she was united in marriage with Gilbert De Jong, an only son of Peter G. and Nettie Dykstra De Jong, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. To this union five children were born: Steven Craig, Michael Wayne, Julie Ann, Gregory Dean and Douglas Jay. Dorothy and Gilbert moved into the same house where he was born near Leighton following their marriage, where they were still residing at the time of her death.

Dorothy was a devoted homemaker, faithfully providing for the needs of her family, while Gilbert was busy farming. All of their children attended the Leighton and Pella Public Schools and graduated from Pella Community High School.

Dorothy then was a parttime housekeeper at Central College in Pella for 21 years. The last 13 years she worked at the Stouffer Townhouse cleaning for football and basketball students. She retired in 1997 and had many good memories of all those students who graduated from that townhouse.

On Thursday afternoon, December 27, 2007, she passed away unexpectedly at her home near Leighton at the age of 73 years, 5 months and 2 days.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Gilbert; their five children and their spouses and eight grandchildren. They and their families are Steve and Deborah (Nielsen) De Jong of Oskaloosa, Mike De Jong of Oskaloosa, Julie De Jong of Knoxville, Greg and Brenda (De Reus) De Jong of Leighton and Doug De Jong of Leighton.

Of her original family Dorothy leaves two brothers: Dean Wayne Vos of Bussey, Iowa; Robert Eugene Vos and his wife, Sharon of Harvey, Iowa; and four sisters-in-law: Grace (De Jong) De Hamer of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Ada De Jong, Charlotte De Jong and Esther (De Jong) Vande Lune all of Pella, Iowa.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents: Ben and Alice Vos; and three brothers: Donald Leroy Vos and his wife, Eunice, Roger Lee Vos and Wesley Gene Vos; and her sister-in-law, Beverly (Dean) Vos.

Dorothy had been an active member of the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Leighton, the Mahaska County Farm Bureau Women, the Central College Auxiliary and the Black Oak and Scott Homemakers Neighborhood Club. She enjoyed reading and baby-sitting with her grandchildren. Outdoor flowers in the summer and fall and doing yard work in general was a very enjoyable hobby and therapy for Dorothy.
