GEORGE FORDHAM One of Alpha's oldest residents, Mr. George Fordham, died in the Alpha Hospital on August 1 at the advanced age of 88 years and eight months. A great Labor stalwart and pioneer, he was a member of the W.P.O. until it became the Australian Labor Party. He was a life member of the Alpha branch of the Australian Labor Party and Alpha Rugby League, and a governor of four race clubs in the Alpha district. He was the last of the foundation members of the Alpha Hospital Committee, now better known as the Hospital Board, and gave 18 years' service to the Alpha School Committee, besides a number of years on the Ambulance Committee. Alpha's race course, Fordham Park, is named in his honour. With such a background of useful living, this grand old man commanded the highest respect of the whole of the community. Mr. Fordham was twice married, both wives having predeceased him. He is survived by three sons and a daughter, Jack and George, of Collinsville, Mrs. Briggs, of Mt. Morgan, and Fred., of Rickarts Ltd., Rockhampton. There are also 18 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. The late' Mr. Fordham was born in Maldon, Victoria, in 1866, and arrived in Queensland in 1870. His experiences in the 1890 strike were well worth listening to. The sympathy of his many friends goes out to his relatives in their sad bereavement. Worker (Brisbane, Qld. : 1890 - 1955), Monday 15 August 1955, page 4
