NELSON, Reginald Heber IV, 83, of Varina, went to be with the Lord on May 13, 2014. He was the son of the late Evelyn and Reginald Nelson. Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his grandson, George William Humphrey. He was a grain cattle farmer and a member of Laurel Hill United Methodist Church. Reggie was involved in service and leadership in numerous civic and farm organizations, such as, 59 years of perfect attendance in Varina Ruritan, 17 year member of the Board of Directors of the State Fair of Virginia, president of the State Board of Agriculture, member of Friends of the Industry of Agriculture, member of the Board of Visitors of Virginia Tech. He was a Golden Hokie, Mason (Varina Lodge), descendant of the Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Ruritan's Tom Downing Fellow, and First Citizen of Varina 1985. He served on Richmond Metropolitan Authority from 1972 to 2003, the Board of Citizen and Farmers Bank, the Board of Rockingham Mutual for 15 years, He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis George Nelson; children, Regina Nelson Humphrey (Burke), Phyllis Nelson Schmick (Jonathan), Reginald William "Bill" Nelson (Lynnette) and Sara Jane Nelson; grandchildren, Jim Humphrey (Angel), Christina Bolling (Matt), Phyllis Humphrey, Nelson Humphrey, Tyler Schmick, Peyton Schmick, Gordon Schmick, Stephanie Nelson, Sara Beth Nelson Araujo (Celso); four great-grandchildren and numerous family members and friends. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23231. A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Laurel Hill United Methodist Church, 1919 New Market Road, Richmond, Va. 23231. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bon Secour's Hospice, Laurel Hill United Methodist Church, or the charity of your choice.
