Sophia was a graduate of Winthrop College and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. She was employed by Sonoco Products Company, and later answered a call to the mission field, serving as a missionary for 43 years in Brazil and served many years as the executive director of Brazil's WMU. Shortly before retirement, she authored a daily devotional publication written in Portuguese.
She was a member of First Baptist Church where she served many years as a Sunday school teacher, and as a co-chairman of the Missions Bazaar. She was also involved in the Prayer Room ministry and the Shut-In ministry.
