Peter Taylor Sword of Burlington, WA passed away on May 6, 2014.
Pete was born July 29, 1930, in Leith, Scotland to Peter T. and Margaret Sword.
He attended Melville College and University of Edinburgh. He graduated in 1953 with degrees in Pure Science and Crop Husbandry.
He then immigrated to Toronto, Canada where he met his wife of 53 years, Mary Christine Grimes. They were married in 1955 in Ingersoll, Canada.
While in Toronto, Peter worked for Canada Packers Feed and Fertilizer Division, and Canadian Breweries Ltd. in research and malt production capacities. In 1968 Pete accepted a position as Plant Manager at Great Western Malting Company's Los Angeles, CA facility. In 1973 he relocated to Vancouver, WA as Great Western's Corporate VP of Production. Peter moved to Burlington, WA in 1978 to administer the Western Washington Farm Crops Association, retiring in 1995.
Peter supported his industry as a member of the Malting Barley Improvement Association, as President of the Master Brewers Association, and by co-authoring papers for the Institute of Brewing.
Pete loved aviation and served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve from 1950 to 1953. He enjoyed participating in team sports especially rugby. Peter provided leadership for the Boy Scouts of Canada.
He is survived by his children, Pamela Hood (Blaine) Richland, WA, Taylor Sword (Mary Beth) Chesapeake, VA, and Ian Sword, Mount Vernon, WA and grandchildren, Trevor Hood (Connie), Evan Hood, Peter T. Sword IV, and Maren Sword, a sister in law Anne Sword, Toronto, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Mary, sister Mhairi Stewart, and brother William T. D. Sword.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Monday, May 19, 2014 at Hulbush Funeral Home, 281 So. Burlington Blvd., Burlington.
Memorials to United General Hospital Foundation of Sedro-Woolley are suggested.
