Laura Carolyn Lowe Olsen was born in Bay City, Texas, on November 14, 1934, the first child of Carrie Elizabeth and Fulton Woodrow Lowe. Laura obtained a nursing degree through the University of Houston after graduation from Brazosport High School. While in training, Laura met Air Force cadet John "Skeet" Olsen. They married in July 1956, and moved on military assignment from New Mexico to Kansas to Germany to California to Arizona to Idaho. In 1970, Major Olsen was killed in a plane crash, so Laura returned to Texas with her two children to resume a full-time career in nursing. She retired from St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan in 1996 and moved to Sugar Land, to be of help to her children and grandchildren. She served two missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: in the Nauvoo Illinois Mission (2009-10) and the Houston Texas South Mission (2011-12). Laura succumbed to cancer on December 28, 2013. A graveside service is set for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014, at Restever Memorial Park Cemetery in Bryan, Texas, under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Annette Olsen, of Sugar Land; by her daughter, Roberta (Robbin) Major, of Missouri City; by three grandchildren, Geordan, Annie Laurie and Kaitlin; and by her brothers, Thomas Lowe, John Paul Lowe and Ronald Lowe, and sister Catherine Hickman.
