Eliza Jane Devilbiss Stoner

Eliza Jane Divilbiss Stoner was the wife of John Stoner according to her Monroe County, Michigan obituary. Divilbiss was the name inscribed on the cemetery marker. She was born in Pennsylvania and died in Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan. Her parents were John Divilbiss/Devilbiss and Maria McCuner/McCunes per different records found. Her obituary has Divilbiss and her husband obituary has Devilbiss for her maiden name.

Eliza and John Stoner were residents on Lincoln Avenue, in the city of Monroe, Michigan. Lincoln Avenue was off Elm Avenue in the Fifth Ward of the city. The home would be about the third block from Elm Avenue. Eliza was widowed at the time of her death.

*Naming convention per marker.
This is one exception for using the name on the cemetery marker. Her maiden was plainly Devilbiss. Eliza was was a society lady in town and may not have liked using her name with Devil in it and changed the spelling. Enough explanation for the change of maiden name on 9-15-2021 to Devilbiss, even though the marker has Divilbiss for the maiden name. It does not interfere with the cemetery search process of her last name of Stoner.

Aged 92 years, 27 days

Eliza Jane Stoner died from pneumonia. Burial was on February 11, 1923.

Eliza was laid to rest by her husband John at Woodland Cemetery, Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan.

FOREVER REMEMBERED

I live in Frederick County, Maryland where the Devilbiss family was one of the main families around. There is even a road called Devilbiss Bridge Road. So that's why I suggested the change in the spelling of her maiden name. Also, it allows her to be indexed with the rest of her family. If you look at her parents and siblings, their names are all spelled Devilbiss.
