Evans enlisted in the US Army in 1940 and received his basic training at Fort Totten, Queens, New York. He then went on to attend officer candidate school at Camp Davis, North Carolina and was commissioned in 1942. He had a rank of First Lieutenant. Evans landed in Africa in 1943 and participated in the African Campaign. During the campaign he became ill and was sent back to the states. Evans died on August 5, 1944 in Denver, Colorado; his mother had been with him since May.
