William D. Vines, 88, passed away at Cape Cod Hospital on Sunday May 11, 2014, of complications from colon cancer. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Shea) Vines. They would have celebrated their 62 years of marriage on May 24th.

Born at home in Scituate, MA., on August 18, 1925, he was the son of the late Henry and Dorothy (Appleford) Vines. He was a WW II Army veteran and arrived in Europe six days after D Day. He served with the 745th Tank Battalion during the Battle of Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was the long time parts manager for Arrow Pontiac in Arlington.

After summering for many years, he and Barbara moved to their home in South Yarmouth in 1985. He was then employed with Corson Cadillac in Hyannis. He served as an usher at Our Lady of the Highway Chapel at 5:30 Mass on Saturdays for many years prior to his illness. He was Past Exalted Ruler at the Hyannis Lodge of Elks, charter member and former District Warden with the St. Pius X Knights of Columbus, a member of the Irish American Club and enjoyed his home and yard work as well as the "Circle" at Parker's River Beach and many trips with his wife.

In addition to his wife he leaves his children William Jr. and his partner Mary Furlong of Killington, VT., Peter and his wife Joan of Billerica, Janice Gouveia and her husband Kevin of Rehoboth, John and his wife Georgina of Toms River, NJ., a brother Henry W. of Lawrenceville, GA., and eight grandchildren.

The Vines family wishes to thank Dr. Kelly Swanson, Dr. Frank Basile, and the staff of the Cape Cod Hospital Oncology Dept. Also a sincere thank you to Grace Reynolds, Eucharistic Minister who visited him every Tuesday.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday May 13 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Morris, O'Connor & Blute Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Drive South Yarmouth. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 am at Saint Pius X Church, South Yarmouth. Burial will follow at Massachusetts National Cemetery.
