Lyle enlisted in Victoria, BC and served in Canada between May 4, 1940 and Oct 27, 1941. He departed Canada for Hong Kong as Staff Sergeant with the Royal Canadian Army Pay Corps.
With the fall of Hong Kong he was taken prisoner on Dec 25, 1941 and was transferred when prisoners were sent to internment camps in Japan on Jan 19, 1943. He was transported there on the Tatsuta Maru arriving at Nagasaki, Japan on Jan 22, 1943. While in the internment camp Tsurumi 3D located between Tokyo and Yokohama, he died from under nourishment, pleurisy and pneumonia.
He was the brother of Samuel Clair Ellis who served with the US Air force overseas, and Hal Grover Ellis who served with the US Navy overseas.
Lyle is also remembered on a marker at Santa Cruz Memorial Park in Santa Cruz, California.
Note*: He stated on his attestation papers that he was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. But he was really born in Prineville, Oregon.
