MADISON – Ruth Miller Hawkins, 93, died Monday, May 12, 2014, at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Sandy Ridge with Pastor Mike Sands officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Hawkins was born on April 8, 1921 in Stokes County to the late Reverend and Mrs. J.A. Joyce. She graduated from Sandy Ridge High School in 1938. She worked for the Greensboro Daily News and Record for 12 years and retired from the Madison Police Department after working 16 years as a school crossing guard. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Madison and a member of the Madison-Mayodan Recreation Department Traveling Seniors.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Everette Hawkins, former Chief of Police of Madison; her daughter, Darlene Hawkins; sister, Lelia Joyce Steele; and brothers, Gilbert Joyce and Gladys Joyce.

Ruth is survived by her son, James Ray Hawkins and wife, Sally of Oak Ridge, NC; grandson, Jim Hawkins and wife, Karen and step-daughter, Taylor Decicco of Ellisboro, NC; great-granddaughter, Jordan Hawkins Harris and her children, Mackenzie and Daniel Harris of Mechanicsville, Va.

She was a devoted wife and loving mother and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
