UNITED STATES ARMY - VIETNAM

James Wilbert "Jay" Gandy, 74, of Upper Deerfield Township and a longtime resident of Hopewell Township passed away late Friday evening at The Cumberland Manor in Hopewell Township.

The son of the late Elmer C. "Pud" and Annarita (nee Zenorini) Gandy, he was born in Bridgeton on June 3, 1939.

A lifelong resident of Hopewell Township, he graduated from Bridgeton High School in 1957 and The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Spanish. For more than 40 years, he worked as a social worker for Cumberland County and also for the Division of Youth and Family Services.

He served in the US Army during the Vietnam Era where he was stationed in Puerto Rico as an intelligence officer.

He was proudly associated for many years with his family's Christmas Tree Farm in lower Hopewell Township. Self-described as a nature lover, he was devoted to encouraging the growth of the Eastern Blue Bird and the Monarch Butterfly. Jay was also a supporter of preserving the research and discoveries of Oberlin Smith, who was the owner of the Ferracute Machine Company in Bridgeton for many years.

Jay is survived by his sister, Angela M. Gandy of Hopewell Township as well as several cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service with military honors at Overlook Cemetery, Greenwich Road, Bridgeton. The interment of Jay's cremated remains will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are requested to the Cumberland County SPCA, 1244 N. Delsea Drive, Vineland, NJ 08360 in memory of Jay's beloved dog, "Merlin."
