Walter Max McIntosh died Saturday, May 10, 2014, at his home in Cameron while under Hospice care.

Max was born February 18, 1939, at the family home in rural Mercer County, the son of Gerald Lowell "Babe" and Alta Merl McKenney McIntosh. He attended White Oak School, Mercer High School and graduated from Spickard High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany.

In 1961, he married Cleo Halloway. They later divorced, and in 1999, he married Sue Robbins Burress.

Max was a 20-year employee of the Wichita, Kan. Fire Department, retiring in 1986. He was employed by Liberty Exterminating Company and later owned and operated Arrow Exterminating Company. He also was owner of the Scotch and Soda Club in Wichita.

In 1994, he moved back to Mercer County and purchased a farm, where he raised Black Angus cattle and enjoyed the country life once again. In 2012, when his health started to fail, he and Sue sold the farm and moved to a small acreage in Cameron. After battling heart problems and surgeries for many years, he was diagnosed with inoperable cancer in August of 2013. Then in September, he suffered a major heart attack and was placed under Hospice care.

Max was handsome, charismatic and charming. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, and loved hosting his annual deer hunting week at his farm. He also thoroughly enjoyed playing pitch with the guys at Smoke's in Spickard; winning more than his share of the games. He was a member of Eagles Club in St. Joseph where he and Sue enjoyed dancing and visiting with their many friends.

Max is survived by his wife, Sue; a daughter, Robin Schlickau, of Wichita; a son, Lance McIntosh of Wichita; a step-daughter, Wendy Brown of Olathe Kan.; a sister, Mary McGrory and husband Cornelius, of Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers, Arlan McIntosh and wife Erma of Bonham, Texas; and Lee McIntosh and wife Nita, Wichita. He is also survived by three grandsons, Damien, Dustin, and Devin McIntosh and two great-grandsons of Wichita; many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins, extended family and friends, and a special sister-in-law, Pat Buffer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Randy; a step-son, Jeff Brown; brothers, Red, Jimmie, Gene, Jerry, Tommy Donny McIntosh; and sisters, Kathleen Wilson, Juanita Greenup and Ruth Reed.

In keeping with his wishes, his body will be cremated and no services held. There will be a private scattering of ashes at a later date.
