Several members of the James Brown family were lost when the SS Arctic collided with the SS Vesta off Cape Race, Newfoundland. They included a son, two daughters, a daughter-in law, and two grandchildren.

Erected by James Brown as a memorial to his son, two daughters, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren who lost their lives when the S.S. Arctic was rammed by the French steamer Vesta in a thick North Atlantic fog. The Gothic revival monument was designed and sculpted by John M. Moffit and features a sculpture of the foundering ship under it's carved canopy. While he marble has suffered from the acidic environment of the 20th century, the inscription carved on the front base panel is still legible.
