Mrs. Nels Knutson, 90, nee Ruby Pearl Schmidt, of Fredericksburg, died Monday, Jan. 8, 2007.

Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 12, at 2 p.m., in the chapel of Beckmann Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Ensrude officiating. Marjorie Ottmers was the organist and Donna Vaughan, the soloist.

Interment followed in Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation was held Thursday evening in the funeral home chapel.

Mrs. Knutson was born Nov. 21, 1916, at Crabapple, the daughter of Max Schmidt and Mary Margaret Fries Schmidt. She married Nels Knutson on Oct. 7, 1939 in San Antonio. He preceded her in death.

A Fredericksburg High School graduate, Mrs. Knutson entered nurse's training at St. David's in Austin and completed her education at Del Mar Junior College in Corpus Christ. She worked as a nurse at Hill Country Memorial Hospital and in Corpus Christi and eventually retired from nursing while at the Methodist hospital in Houston.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and over the years served on numerous committees.

Mrs. Knutson is survived by a son, Donald Knutson and his wife, Virginia, of Chesterfield, MO, and a step-son and his wife, Vernon and Barbara Knutson of Fredericksburg; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Knutson was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Selma Ann Knutson, and three sisters, including Julia Schmidt, Ester M. Oehler and Viola Mae Gold.

Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity, the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or to the charity of choice.

Pallbearers included Kermit Burrer, Fred Hamilton, Stanley Sauer and Jim Schoenaerts .
