James L. Stanfill first married Nancy Lay in 1872 at Campbell County Tennessee. James and Nancy had eight children:
William "Billy" Sherrod Stanfill, Louis Milton "Mitt" Stanfill, Cynthia Stanfill, Male Stanfill who died as a young boy (name lost to record), Lucy Stanfill, Jesse Stanfill, Florence Stanfill, and an Infant that died of pneumonia. Nancy Lay Stanfill died 1887 in Campbell County Tennessee.

After his wife's death, James moved his family to Madison County Arkansas where he met and married Mary Francis Harrison in 1888. James and Mary Stanfill had thirteen children of their own:
Manuel Oscar Stanfill, Harris Maynard Stanfill, Ora Paralee Stanfill, Felix Donald Stanfill, Flora Josephine Stanfill, Charles Arnold Stanfill, Cora May Stanfill, Susie Myrtle Stanfill, Tennie Zella Stanfill, Infant Boy Stanfill, Benjamin Franklin Stanfill, James Owen Stanfill, and Dolvie "Dob" Anderson Stanfill.

James and his family moved to Oklahoma in 1902 and purchased a farm near Chandler, Oklahoma. James Stanfill made his living as a farmer.
