A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday in Modesto for Ben Gunner Engstrand, 75, a former Tracy resident who had worked as an engineer in the oil industry throughout the world, including designing and constructing oil platforms in the North Sea.

He died Sunday at home in Modesto following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Engstrand was born in Stockton and grew up in Tracy, where his father, Ben Engstrand Sr., was a building contractor and member of the Tracy City Council in the 1950s.

Ben Gunner Engstrand graduated from Tracy High School in 1948 and served in the U.S. Army in Japan during the Korean War. He graduated in 1955 from Oregon State University with degrees in civil and marine engineering.

After serving as a civil engineer in California, Mr. Engstrand traveled throughout the world as a structural engineer with major oil companies and worked on the Alaska Oil Pipeline. For about three decades, he designed and constructed oil platforms in the North Sea between Norway and Scotland. He lived in Norway 22 years and in Newfoundland, Canada, before returning to California in 1999. He had made his home in Modesto since 2002.

His final project was designing and building the CBC Steel Building in Lathrop.

Mr. Engstrand’s work and traveling were his passions, family members said. He also enjoyed mountaineering, which he started while living in Italy, where he worked on satellite tracking stations.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Engstrand of Modesto; three daughters, Bonnie Sweat of San Diego, Barbara Eline of Los Gatos and Sarah Molda with the U.S. Air Force in Las Vegas; two sons, John G. Engstrand with the U.S. Air Force in Oklahoma City, and Peter W. Engstrand of Modesto; and 11 grandchildren.

Also surviving are two sisters, Barbara Harvey of Modesto and Anna Elissagaray of Tracy.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William Engstrand.

Monday’s Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1813 Oakdale Road, in Modesto.

Interment will be private in San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella.

Salas Bros. Funeral Chapel, 419 Scenic Drive, in Modesto, is handling arrangements.

Contributions in Mr. Engstrand's name may be sent to the Modesto Community Hospice, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto 95356.
