Emil Johnson, 94, of Portales, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.
He was born Feb. 24, 1911, in Elmore City, Okla., to Dona Belle and George Jefferson Johnson.
He grew up on a farm near Elmore City, Okla. He completed his university studies at Tishomingo, Okla. He taught school for a year, but family said he preferred to work outside and returned to farming. He married Beulah Moore on Aug. 12, 1933, in Paul's Valley, Okla. They moved to Portales in 1942.
He began doing carpenter work in Portales and was involved in the construction of the Air Force Base as well as many area homes. He was a member of the Southside Church of Christ and had served the congregation as an elder for more than 30 years.
He also helped with the construction of the church.
Family members he was a generous man who built numerous ramps for local citizens in wheelchairs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Julian, John and Ralph Johnson; and a sister, Edith Long.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Curtis Johnson (and wife, Helen) of Albuquerque; three daughters, Joan Nuckols of Portales, Juanice Robinson (Roy) of Lovington and Barbara Chandler of Portales; 10 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Burial will take place in Portales Cemetery.
Jay Robinson, Gary "Stubb" Nuckols, Mike Nuckols, Zachary Vigil, Travis Rogers and Garrett Scisson will serve as pallbearers.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Christian Children's Home.
