Many important trials, which occurred during his occupancy of that office, stamped the man as one of the most lucid and practical thinkers, as well as one of the most logical and forcible debaters that had yet appeared at the American bur. This reputation he held at the day of his death.
Mr. Maxwell held the office of Assistant Judge Advocate General of the United States Army during the your 1814. During the administrations of Taylor and Fillmore he held the position of Collector of the Port of New York. The intervening years, with but short interruption, were passed in companionship with the classical writings, in which he delighted, and frequent association with a few warm personal friends, among the most constant of whom was Thurlow Weed. Occupying his summer residence for so many years at Upper Nyack, there are few of our citizens who will not miss the dignified presence, the silvery hair and the kindly smile of Hugh Maxwell.
