Myrtle Mae Hizer Myrtle, 99, passed away peacefully April 1, 2014with family and friends by her side. It was her 82nd wedding anniversary. Born January 7, 1915 in Fresno, CA to Percy and Eva Goodeill. She was the oldest of 7 children. At an early age her family moved to Hayward CA, where she later met the love of her life, Edgar Hizer, and at the age of 17 they were married on April 1, 1932. In 2002 they celebrated their 70th Anniversary. Edgar passed away later that year at the age of 95. We have always said mom was psychic, and there are many stories in her life that kind back it up. She always knew when to call and check on family and friends. Mom and Dad retired in the 70's and did more than their share of traveling. They wore out two motor homes, and they were famous for showing up when you least expected them. Everybody they met became family, and most people that live to be 99 usually out live their friends, but Mom was still adding to her family till the day she passed. She touched the hearts of everybody she met. Mom enjoyed her early life following Ed from logging camp to logging camp as the camp cook. She enjoyed telling the story about a logger who complained about her cooking, and she told him to "Hit the road!". Dad had to go get the guy back from the local diner. Mom said Dad was not very pleased with her. They tried their hand at ranching, growing potatoes, onions, and chickens. I remember acres of each. Mom was also proud she taught Native American pottery in Hoopa with the native clay. She did fly-tying, macram‚, made Native American jewelry, candle making, sewing, quilting, and I believe every other arts and crafts that met her challenge. In the later years mom and dad traveled many miles selling Forever Living Aloe products. Mom had the honor in 1939 having a half page article in the Oakland Tribune as the only "Lady Blacksmith in Alameda County", as she worked in her husband Ed's blacksmith shop in Hayward CA. Myrtle is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Edgar F. Hizer, all of her siblings, son-in-law Larry Singleton, and grandson Michael Singleton. Survived by son, Frank (Linda) Hizer; daughter, Vonda Singleton of Tucson Az; Grandchildren- Donna (Gary) Wirth, Joseph (Nadya) Hizer, Stuart (Lesa) Singleton, Charlie (Donna) Singleton, and Jackie Singleton, and numerous Great and Great-Great Grand kids, neices and nephews. Mom taught the grand kids the fun stuff, some that their moms didn't appreciate, like, "Cheers", after you take a drink of anything. There were several others that Mom and Dad claimed as their kids also. They took so many people under their wings, and I couldn't try to name them all. A very special heartfelt thanks goes out to the employees at Fortuna Rehabilitation & Wellness Center. They were so special to Mom in the four years she lived there. Ginger made sure mom attended as many activities and day-trips as possible. As Mom was passing, several employees came and stood by her bedside for a few minutes before going back to work. Tuesday was Mom's favorite day, Jim Meade came to play the piano after lunch, and then it was "Cowboy Music", with Bill McBride and Don Hicks. Their music took her back to her dancing days. She continued to chair dance up until the end. Many thanks also to Drs. Phil Olkin (who shared Mom's birthday), C. Ray Jones, and John Coleman (who Mom loved to pick on). Also a special thanks to all the people who called and sent emails and cards. Thank you, thank you! There will be opening and closing services of the Niche, where Mom and Dad will be laid to rest (Mom would not let Dad be placed, as she wanted them to go together) at 12:00 Friday May 16, 2014 at Sunrise Cemetery, and a potluck Celebration of Life for Mom immediately following at the Fire Hall at 320 S. Fortuna Blvd from 1 to 4 PM. In lieu of flowers, please Donate to the Fortuna Fire Dept, 320 S. Fortuna Blvd, Fortuna Ca 95540; Fortuna Rehabilitation & Wellness Center, 2321 Newburg Rd, Fortuna CA 95540; or a charity of your choice . Arrangements are under the care of Goble's Mortuary.
