James Robert Dean "Bob" Hem, Sr. 75, of 626 Overman died at 11:15 a.m. October 1, 2005 at his home. He was born July 7, 1930 in Wapello County, Iowa to LaFred and Margaret Hartley Hem. He married Jean LaVonne Hartman on July 8, 1956 in Ottumwa.
A resident of Ottumwa all of his life, Bob graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1949. He served in the Korean Conflict and retired from the Army Reserves in 1992 after 33 years of service. Bob served the city of Ottumwa as a professional firefighter from 1962 to 1992, retiring as assistant Fire Chief. He was a Past Commander and Quarter Master and lifetime member of Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars, was a member of O.B. Nelson Post #3 of the American Legion and felt honored to serve on both firing squads.
Surviving is his wife, Jean; a daughter, Connie ReNea (Todd) Denny of rural Delta, their children, Brandy Glattfelder and great granddaughter, Alanna Wilson, Sarah Denny and Tyler Denny; a son, James R. "Bob" Hem, Jr. of Ottumwa, his children, Kelsie, Tiffany "Annie" and Katie Hem; 3 sisters, Florence Holden of Bonaparte, Margaret (Sam) Nutter of Ottumwa, ElDonna Graham of Moulton; sister-in-law, Rosa Hem of Ottumwa; two brothers, Darwin (Betty) Hem of Yucaipa, California and Royce (Betty) Hem of Hartford; several nephews and nieces.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles Hem.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Kanne officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by O.B. Nelson Post #3 of the American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Active pallbearers will be firefighters Stan Swartz, Mike Jones, Dave Sertterh, Rick Kleinman, Bill Trout and Mike Craff. Honorary pallbearers will be active and retired firefighters and V.F.W. and Legion Firing Squad members.
Visitation will begin after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
Memorials have been established to V.F.W. and American Legion Firing Squad, Sons of American Legion or donor's choice.
