After living in destitute circumstances nearly three weeks, Charles Zephir, 45 years old, committed suicide in "Dead Man's Gulch," near Marshall and Dover streets in South Baltimore, Monday night. After remarking that he had spent his last dollar, he left his wife and eight children late the evening before. Yesterday morning his body was found with an empty carbolic acid bottle by his side. Coroner Reinhardt, of the Southern district, gave a verdict of suicide.

Zephir came to this country 25 years ago, and a year later he secured a position with the American Tobacco Company, on Barre street. He held the place until three weeks ago, when he was laid off with a large number of other employees. His eldest son, who is only 19 years old, lost his position about the same time. As the family depended upon them for support, the little money they had soon gave out. After trying to secure another position and being unsuccessful, Zephir became disheartened.

It is not known why he selected "Dead Man's Gulch" as a place to end his life. It is a place where a number of suicides have taken place, and where Mr. George Gesswein, brother of Sergeant Gesswein, of the Southern district, was murdered about two years ago. The gulch was made from a car track from the foot of South Charles street to Light street.
