OTTUMWA ? Nathan ?Nate? David Messer, 20, of 6 Sussex Place, died March 5, 2006, as a result of a house fire at 11612 140th St., Ottumwa.

He was born March 23, 1985 in Ottumwa to Mel and Jolynn Woofter Messer.

A graduate of Ottumwa High School and Indian Hills Community College, he was attending Buena Vista University. He was presently working at Community First Credit Union.

He was all-state catcher for Ottumwa High School, and played with American Legion Baseball and Indian Hills Community College Baseball team. He loved to fish, play guitar, playing poker with his friends, and he really loved his little brother.

Surviving are his parents, Mel and Jolynn Messer of Ottumwa; brother, Zachary Messer at home; grandparents, Dave and Sandy Woofter of Ottumwa, Mel and Joyce Messer of Ottumwa; great-grandmother, Gwen Warner of Blakesburg; his second mom, Sheila Salter of Ottumwa.

He was preceded in death by great-grandparents, Stan Warner, Eula Reisch, Don and Florence Jacobs, Ellen and Buck Woofter.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Willard St. United Methodist Church with Rev. Stephanie Raphael-Nakos officiating. Burial will be in Shaul Cemetery.

Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Pallbearers will be Ryan Brisendine, Danny Francis, Derek Heinrichs, Zach Richards, Jim Johns, Joel Hinebaugh, Brody Stevens, Matt Rhoads and Nathan Overturf.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to American Legion Baseball and Ottumwa High Baseball programs.
