Civil War Union Naval Officer. He served in the Union Navy during the Civil War and commanded ships in the blockade and assault of Mobile Bay. He also served in the two amphibious attacks on Fort Fisher, North Carolina. Promoted to Rear-Admiral in 1884, he commanded the United States Navy's European Squadron from 1871 to 1873.
