First Lt. Walter B. Ward, 29, reconnaissance pilot with the Eighth AAF in England, was killed in action over Germany on April 29, the War department has informed his family. He had been overseas 10 months and had made 47 missions when they last heard from him. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nora Marie Ward, 1707 North Broadway; three children, Glenda Sue, *, who lives with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Evans, 1701 East Central, and Barbara Ann, *, and Walter B., Jr., *, 1707 North Broadway; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Ward, 1920 East Central; five brothers, John Ward, Rome, Ga; Bartlett Ward, San Leandro, Cal.; Glenn Ward, a civilian worker in honolulu; Raymond Ward, 2211 North Rogers, a Frisco fireman and Ernest Ward, a patient in Dibble General hospital, Palo Alto, Cal.; and four sisters, Mrs. Marion Demore, 1090 East Central, Mrs. Thelma Armstrong, 319 West Division; Miss Iantha Ward, St. John's hospital; and Mrs. Naomi Gardner, in the 900 block of North Main. Miss Iantha Ward is to graduate from nurse's training two weeks from now. Lieutenant Ward was a 1933 graduate of SHS and a member of the Central Christian church. Memorial services will be held at the Central Christian church this morning in connection with the regular church services, in honor of Lt. Walter Ward and Pvt. Warren Hoefgen. Gold stars will be place on the large service flag and dedicated in their honor...Lieutenant Ward was a photographer for months, and had flow a very fast unarmed ship, taking pictures of enemy positions. More recenly he had transferred to a fighter plane, helping to provide a fighter escort for the photographer's ship. He was killed recently over Germany, the family was notified last week.
