Sofronia was the daughter of Pleasant Western and Nancy Ann Taylor, she was 1 of 13 children.

Sofronia married Rev. George Larkin Tipps, Feb. 25, 1878, Claybrook, Madison County, Tennessee, she was 15. They with children from Rev. Tipps previous marriage, hitched a wagon and headed to Texas. They settled in Grandview, Johnson County, Texas on November 1, 1878.

Rev. Tipps was a prairie circuit minister for the Methodist Church. Sofronia was known to have opined, "I just got all the bed bugs out of the parsonage and we moved again." From her obituary, "Mrs. Tipps has known the hardships, the heart aches, also the joys of a pioneer Methodist minister's wife."

In about 1880, the Tipps took in a young orphan named Lee Ora Bowen. She was approximately 2 years old. Lee Ora stayed with the Tipps until 1893.

George and Sofronia had 4 children of their own. Robert Western Tipps, 1880, Ida Jennie Tipps, 1885; twins: John Franklin Tipps and Pleasant Ann Tipps, (Annie), 1892.

Rev. & Mrs. Tipps retired from service in 1927 and lived their remaining years in Campbell, Texas. Rev. Tipps preceded her in death. Following the death of her husband, she lived with her daughter Ann Tipps McNatt, in Campbell, Texas.

At the time of her death, her surviving siblings were Mrs. Jennie Lou Peugh, Fulbright, Texas, Mrs. Minnie Lee Baxter, Johntown Texas, Mrs. Mary Melvina Bennett, Wayne, Okla., George W. Western, Tushka, Okla., & David E. Western, Wayne Okla.

Member of the Campbell, Texas Chapter of the Eastern Star and First Methodist Church of Campbell.

Rev. & Mrs. Tipps have 3 children buried in Brigham cemetery; Ida Jennie Tipps Young, John Franklin Tipps, and Ann Tipps McNatt. Their oldest son, Robert Western Tipps burial location is unknown. He was born Sept. 6, 1880 and died Nov. 5, 1882.
