Byron is the brother of Ernest George Burkhart. In his book "Killers of the Flower Moon" [ISBN 978-0-307-74248-3], author David Grann notes on page 328 that his birth name was Byron but that he went by Bryan, and Grann used that name in his book. The two brothers were involved in the Osage "Reign of Terror" under the tutelage of their uncle William King "Bill" Hale.
