James Galloway was the son of William and Sophia Cox Galloway and the husband of Elizabeth Mouser Galloway. His gravestone is inscribed: Captain 20 Ark Inf CSA. Born in Tennessee, he was the grandson of Marshall Galloway (who served in the American Colonial Army from 1777 to 1783 during the American Revolution). James came to Hempstead Co., Arkansas about 1853 with his father and brothers and all are shown as having original land purchases in Township 13, Range 23, which is located just southeast of present day Hope, Arkansas. It was here that James met Elizabeth Mouser and married her on Nov 8, 1854. During the War for Southern Independence James served in Co."C", 20th Regiment, Arkansas Infantry, during the Vicksburg campaign. It is said that he was wounded in the Battle at Bakers Creek (May 16, 1863). James brothers, John and Jabe F. Galloway also served in this unit. After the war James and Elizabeth returned to farming and raising a family. Living variously in Hempstead and Lafayette Counties. The original 1 1/2 acres Shover Springs Cemetery, in Hempstead Co., DeRoan township, was donated to the Shover Springs Missionary Baptist church on 21 Aug 1880 by James and Elizabeth Galloway. This is believed to have been the original Galloway homestead and family cemetery containing the burials of James parents (William and Sophia Galloway) and other family members (the original burial markers having long since vanished). James and Elizabeth are buried at Hall cemetery north of Shover Springs on Rocky Mound Road. James and Elizabeth's children were: seven sons, William, Amos, Martin, Jessie, Robert, James and Marzook; and three daughters, Emma, Elizabeth (Fullenwider) and Bamma (Hamm).
