HADLEY EATON CHARGED WITH FIRST DEGREE MURDER AFTER SLAYING
OF MRS ETHEL DINGLE NEAR SCHOOL - MRS. MERRITT KEITH IS SHOT IN ARM BY ASSAILANT
- LEDFORD INJURED - EIGHTEEN HOUR MANHUNT ENDS IN CAPTURE AFTER SUICIDE ATTEMPT.
Mrs. Ethel Dingle, 29 years old, was killed Friday afternoon a few minutes after 4 o'clock, Mrs. Merritt Keith received one shot in her left arm, and Supt. Clell Ledford was shot in the right arm and back when an assailant identified by Mrs. Keith as Hadley Eaton, 31-year-old former suitor of Mrs. Dingle, shot wildly in front of the grade school building here at the two school teachers and passers-by. Eaton was captured after more than an eighteen-hour manhunt in Shelby County directed by Sheriff Elmer P. Threlkeld and the Highway Patrol by a patrolman and three members of a posse. Eaton attempted suicide by firing the 12-gauge pump shotgun he is thought to have used in the slaying, into his abdomen.
Mrs. Dingle, who had taught the fifth-sixth grade here since the spring of 1937, was a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Staggs of northeast of town. She was born Sept. 3, 1910. She graduated from Shelbyville High School in 1928 and attended Culver-Stockton College in Canton in 1929 and 1931. In 1930 she taught Rockwood School and later taught in Plevna.
In August, 1933, she was married to Paul Dingle, from whom she was divorced in 1936. She attended the summer session at the University of Missouri in Columbia for the past three summers.
Surviving her are her 4-year-old son, Jerry; her parents; one sister, Mrs. Alvan Hollenbeck of northwest of town; and two brothers, Lee Staggs of Leonard, and Roy Staggs of Sharrard, Illinois.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon from the Shelbyville Christian Church to the Pleasant Prairie Cemetery.
The local schools were dismissed Monday. They opened yesterday with Mrs. Clell Ledford, wife of the superintendent, in charge of the fifth and sixth grades. Mrs. Ledford will teach until the board elects another teacher.
